Rhodochrosite is a rare form of manganese carbonate that is only found in a small number of locations worldwide. It is mined in Argentina and Colorado (at the Sweet Home Mine near Alma and nearby localities), Peru and South Africa. Rhodochrosite’s beautiful rose colour is associated as a symbol of love - the Incas used to refer to it as ‘Inca Rose’ and believed that the gemstone was the blood of their fallen royalty. Ranging from raspberry to rose-red, rhodochrosite is the national gemstone of Argentina and the state mineral of Colorado. Its other names are ‘Raspberry Spar’, ‘Manganese Spar’, ‘Rosa del Inca’ and ‘Rosinca’. The name ‘rhodochrosite’ is the Greek word for pink/rose colour. Rhodochrosite’s pink and white banding make it ideal as semi-precious gemstone jewellery and stalactites of it are often cross-cut to display concentric bands for larger pieces.
These Inca rose / rhodochrosite crystal earrings are very eye catching with a bit of pink and white lacy detail, and display the gemstone in small rectangular cabochons. They measure approximately 30mm high (1.2” drop length) and are 10mm across at their widest point. The pink crystal banding of white and raspberry are of a good contrast. Each of the silver earrings has an elegant handmade sterling silver fish hook earring wire.
