Ocean jasper (otherwise known as “Atlantis Stone” and “Sea Jasper”) is a rare variety of jasper that can only be found on the northwest coast of Madagascar. The name “Ocean Jasper” is trademarked to a location of the original mine near Marovato, owned by Paul Obenich. It is mined at the base of a cliff that is only accessible by boat during low tide. Sea jasper is a similar type of gemstone but is found in the Madagascar Minerals mines a short distance away. Ocean jasper with circular spheres or “eyes” in it is also known as “Orbicular Jasper” and is a highly prized, collectable gemstone – the orbs are formed out of quartz and feldspar. Ocean jasper comes in a wide variety of colours, which are evolved from the minerals of volcanic lava streams. As a gemstone, ocean jasper is a newer discovery and was discovered on a beach in the area during the 1990s.
These ocean jasper gemstone earrings have a crescent shape and are large enough to show off the orbicular jasper, while being light enough to wear comfortably. Set in 925 sterling silver, they feature beautiful colouring, crystalline detail and would make an excellent gift for gemstone jewellery lovers (it’s hard to find ocean jasper earrings with good detail in them). Beautifully formed by nature, these dangle earrings feature orbs in mustard, cream and pink on a green jasper background. Measuring approximately 40mm high (drop length) and 15mm across at their widest point, each of the gemstone earrings has a handmade sterling silver fish hook earring wire.
