Turquoise is one of the oldest gemstones, revered throughout history since as early as 3200 BC, when the Egyptians mined it for mosaic masks, inlay jewellery and statues. It is a hydrous phosphate of copper and aluminium and the name is derived from French, meaning ‘Turkish stone’ because of the trade routes and bazaars where it was transported through Turkey. Turquoise is only used in jewellery and ornamental objects. Native Americans mined turquoise for over a thousand years, using it to protect burial sites. Priests wore turquoise when they conducted ceremonies invoking the sky spirit. Wearing turquoise on the body symbolised the sky spirit alive on the Earth.
