One-of-a-kind UFO fairy stone pendant set in 925 sterling silver – a beautiful gemstone cabochon specimen naturally sculpted into the shape of an alien spaceship!
Fairy stones, also known as ‘Goddess stones’ or ‘Menilite opal’ are found in ancient glacier deposits in Canada, Scandinavia, Greenland, the British Isles and Morocco. Usually they are grey or off-white, but they can also come in tan, beige and brown colours. Fairy stones are made of calcium carbonate and clay (argillaceous sand mixed with limestone cement) and have disc shapes, which are formations over pebbles or fossils. Even today, the stones may contain traces of miniature worms and micro-organisms that were fossilised millions of years ago.
The stones were formed by diminishing glaciers – water containing carbon dioxide flowed through the rocks and broke down the limestone. The leftover lime deposits were sculpted over time into fairy stones and washed up on river and lake shores. Fairy stones are very textural and peaceful – touching one makes you feel an ancient connection with the Earth.
The name ‘fairy stone’ was given from the Algonquin Tribe of Northern Quebec. Tribesmen in northern Canada used to carry a fairy stone for luck, wealth and prosperity and giving a fairy stone to someone else meant gifting them a piece of your luck. Fairy stones were also used for protection – as shields in rituals and even for preventing nightmares by placing it under children’s beds.
This sterling silver pendant makes an ideal fairy stone amulet and is intriguingly shaped like a UFO. It has markings on its upper body, which are indeterminate, but could also be natural patterning or fossilised components. The stone measures approximately 45mm from the top of the bail to the base and is 33mm in diameter.
