Large, colourful crazy lace agate pendant set in 925 sterling silver, with a vintage-style filigree bail. This gemstone pendant has interesting patterns with good detail and natural colours, as well as a ‘smashed window’ appearance in the oval cabochon (the inclusions are solid/filled).
Crazy lace agate (also known as Mexican agate) is a beautifully layered gemstone with earthy swirls and frills (especially when it is natural and not dyed). It can sometimes look like abstract art and is actually a type of banded chalcedony with an infusion of iron and aluminium that creates the colourful layers. Crazy lace agate can only be found in Chihuahua, in Mexico and is associated with parties, festivals and dances. Archaeologists believe crazy lace agate was worn by soldiers as a protective gemstone during battle but later cultural understanding of the gemstone was that it conveyed optimism and encouragement. Crazy lace agate is sometimes called the rainbow of the Earth as it shows a lot of gorgeous earth colours and shapes.
This large pendant has an interesting colour palette, including pink, garnet, white, grey, yellow, brown and many more shades. The centre features an abstract ‘eye’, along with other shapes and the natural inclusions add further interest and look a little bit like a smashed window. The inclusions are filled and the surface is smooth across the whole pendant. There is a small amount of shiny hematite in one of the inclusions.
Finely detailed natural crazy lace agate like this, containing spots and swirls can be hard to find, so this pendant would be of interest to agate collectors. With a hinged, vintage style filigree bail, this pendant measures approximately 50mm (2”) from the top of the bail to the base and is 32mm across at the widest point. The pendant hangs straight and true when worn.
