Rhyolite is a banded or spotted volcanic rock containing silica inclusions and is formed by rapidly cooling magma. The crystals grow in patterns in the rock. Rhyolite is composed of a variety of crystals and inclusions, including quartz, plagioclase, potassium feldspar, biotite and amphibole. It is sometimes called ‘rainforest rhyolite’, ‘rainforest jasper’ and ‘Australian rainforest jasper’ which are nicknames for green rhyolite. Geologically, rhyolite is found in Australia, Germany, Spain, Iceland, Ireland, New Zealand, India, China and the USA.
This rainforest jasper pendant displays gorgeous crystalline and multi coloured inclusions, set in a green background. Shaped into a feminine oval, it is an ideal specimen of green rhyolite and measures 33mm (1.5”) high, including the bail, and is 18mm across at its widest point. The gemstone pendant hangs straight and true when worn.
