Amazing ancient Roman glass pendant with a rainbow patina, made with a copper colourant, buried in sand since the Roman empire and excavated in Israel. Set in 925 sterling silver.
Ancient Roman glass was made with a lost glass-making art over 2,000 years ago, mainly in ancient Israel, which was the largest glass producer for the Roman Empire. It was made by mixing sand, alkali, sodium carbonate and metal colourants, with seaweed and lime also used in the production process. Colours were chosen to mimic gemstone colours. Scientists still cannot replicate the process. The glass was buried by sands with the fall of the Empire and is being mined today in archaeological excavation sites in Israel. Ancient Roman glass is considered rare, being a limited and finite resource. Roman glass can have a rainbow coating on it, called a ‘patina’ and this is formed by chemical reactions with the surrounding soil it was buried in.
This gemstone pendant is set in 925 sterling silver and displays a stunning rainbow patina and interesting surface mottling. My photos do not fully capture the beauty of this antique jewellery! The Roman glass is transparent, but sits beautifully against skin as the transparency is hidden when wearing. Set in a custom made silver pendant bezel, this historical jewellery is a great way to wear a real piece of ancient Rome. The pendant measures 48mm from the top of the bail to the base and is 35mm across at the widest point.
