Stunning genuine Detroit agate fordite pendant with layers in bullseye cabochon. Set in 925 sterling silver, it is an excellent historical automotive keepsake for your car jewellery collection!
Fordite is also known as Detroit agate or Motor City agate and is made up of many colourful layers. It is formed by the build-up of automotive enamel paint which was sprayed on mass produced cars in Ford factories last century, from the 1930s on. The paint was sprayed and repeatedly baked onto the tracks and skids containing the painted car frames. Over time, the super-cured layers hardened together and were removed and cut into slabs for rockhounds to make psychedelic cabochons out of. Car painting now uses a different technique, so fordite slabs are a limited and increasingly rare resource.
This fordite pendant displays gorgeous layers of glittery and opaque automotive enamel and has been beautifully polished. Attractively shaped, it is a lovely specimen of fordite and measures 35mm high (including the bail) and is 18mm across at its widest point. The pendant hangs straight and true when worn.
