Natural blue scheelite earrings with pretty crystalline formations visible in each round cabochon, set in 925 sterling silver – unique crystal earrings ideal as white witch jewelry!

Scheelite is a rare gemstone, well-known among collectors for its interesting crystal formation. A calcium tungstate ore, it has an unusual tetragonal crystal formation, which often displays triangular growths and twinning. Scheelite can come in many different colours and contains trace molybdenum as well. Scheelite forms in many different locations in high-temperature veins, greisens, granites and skarn - from volcanic-sedimentary seabeds, to hot granite tungsten-rich magma injections into calcium rich rocks and even alpine clefts.

Scheelite was discovered in 1781 in Dalarna, Sweden. The heavy weight of the ore originally led Swedes to name it tungsten, meaning ‘heavy stone’. Later, the tungsten metal was discovered and named by Karl Wilhelm Scheele and the separated gemstone was renamed as scheelite in his honour. Industry used scheelite as a principal source of tungsten for decades in the US, for use as filament in electric lighting and more. Since incandescent bulbs are now being replaced by LEDs, tungsten is not mined for this purpose anymore.

Scheelite was mined until 1990 at King Island in Tasmania and is still mined in many other places in the world, although gem-quality scheelite crystals are rare.

These blue scheelite earrings display a patterned crystal formation with pronounced twinning. Shaped into circles and set in sterling silver, they are crystal earrings ideal for a white witch or crystal jewellery collector. Beautifully formed, with colours by nature, they measure approximately 33mm high (1.3” drop length) and are 17mm across at their widest point. Each of the gemstone earrings has an elegant handmade sterling silver fish hook earring wire.
