Selenite is a translucent, pearly crystal gemstone with a white luminous flash, named after the Greek moon goddess ‘Selene’, who had the power to light up the night. It is a crystallised form of gypsum and is found in many places worldwide – the Greeks even used to make windows out of it. Plaster of Paris was invented from large quantities of gypsum mined near Paris, France, and French farmers used to add raw gypsum to their soil. Selenite is formed in large deposits and beds of sedimentary rocks such as in limestone or clay. As a softer gemstone, it is recommended not to submerge selenite in water and to store it in a soft fabric bag to prevent scratching. Remove selenite before participating in sports or activities that can cause perspiration.
In crystal lore, selenite is said to help us open up to higher frequencies and messages from the universe – it is used to conduct energy and cleanse other crystals of negative energy.
