Herkimer diamonds are not actually diamonds, but are called that because the first discoveries were nicknamed ‘Middleville diamonds’ and ‘Little Falls diamonds’ and the nicknames stuck. Herkimer diamonds are actually double-terminated quartz crystals that are mined from dolomite in Herkimer County, New York and the Mohawk River Valley. Only the crystals mined from this exact part of the world can be called ‘Herkimer diamonds’. The ‘diamonds’ have exceptional clarity and beautiful natural faceting with 18 faces (sides) on each crystal. The crystals were formed in cavities in dolomite bedrock in the aforementioned locations millions of years ago. Today, Herkimer diamond jewellery is enjoyed and worn for its rarity and beautiful clarity.
