Selenite is a translucent, pearly crystal gemstone with a white luminous flash, named after the Greek moon goddess ‘Selene’, who had the power to light up the night. It is a crystallised form of gypsum and is found in many places worldwide – the Greeks even used to make windows out of it. Plaster of Paris was invented from large quantities of gypsum mined near Paris, France, and French farmers used to add raw gypsum to their soil. Selenite is formed in large deposits and beds of sedimentary rocks such as in limestone or clay. As a softer gemstone, it is recommended not to submerge selenite in water and to store it in a soft fabric bag to prevent scratching. Remove selenite before participating in sports or activities that can cause perspiration.
This high quality gemstone ring is a rectangular ring with a luminous white flash and translucent crystal, ideal for a feminine appearance. A polished natural selenite ring, it measures approximately 21mm from the base of the rectangle to the top and is 9mm across at its widest point. This crystal ring has a split band.
