Carnelian is an orange coloured gemstone from the chalcedony family, which the ancient Egyptians referred to as a ‘setting sun’. It is also reminiscent of autumn. The Egyptian culture also likened Carnelian to the fertile menstrual blook of Isis, the mother god and master architects use to wear it to show their rank. The name ‘carnelian’ comes from the latin word meaning ‘flesh’. In ancient Byzantine and Assyrian cultures, carnelian was used for courage in battle and in performances and was believed to bring courage, power and endurance. Alchemists of the Middle Ages used carnelian as a boiling stone to activate the energy of other chalcedony gemstones. Carnelian is mined in Brazil, India, Madagascar, Scotland, the USA and many other places.
