Sunstone is a rare, natural gemstone found in the USA (Oregon), southern India and Russia. It comes in a deep red-brown, greyish-black or solid black colour and is an igneous rock formed out of molten lava full of minerals which is cooled rapidly under the Earth’s surface. Sunstone sparkles with many colours because of its microscopic hematite inclusions and also its rare metallic copper inclusions. It has a glassy texture as well, which is due to its high silica content.
The oldest black sunstone was found in India 5,000 BC. Sunstone was highly prized during the reign of the Mughal Empire in the 16th and 17th centuries due to its unique properties and some mineralogists believe that sunstones were also popular among Native American cultures 1,500 years ago. The scarcity of sunstones means high quality ones cost more than many other gemstones and they can range up to thousands of dollars per carat.
