Fordite is also known as Detroit agate or Motor City agate and is made up of many colourful layers. It is formed by the build-up of automotive enamel paint which was sprayed on mass produced cars in Ford factories last century, from the 1930s on. The paint was sprayed and repeatedly baked onto the tracks and skids containing the painted car frames. Over time, the super-cured layers hardened together and were removed and cut into slabs for rockhounds to make psychedelic cabochons out of. Car painting now uses a different technique, so fordite slabs are a limited and increasingly rare resource.
This Detroit agate sterling silver ring is cut in a puffy pillow rectangle, perfect for showing off the layers of the fordite jewelry. The gemstone ring is unisex and is an ideal gift ring for men or for women. The centre of the stone has a grey oval of sparkly metallic in it, and the layers around it form part of the bullseye effect. The neutral colours remind of old school retro style and are also very versatile, able to be paired with a lot of outfits.
