Indonesian fossil coral is agatised fossilised coral from mountains on the islands of Sumatra and Java. 23 million years ago, ancient reefs were thrust up into the mountains by tectonic plate collisions and the corals became buried in volcanic ash and sediments. Oceans rose and fell, and with pressure and compaction, the stranded corals fossilised into silica, iron, manganese and other minerals, but retained the fossilised skeletal remains of the original coral, which can still be seen when polished. Different minerals form different colours in the gemstone.
Fossil coral deposits were traditionally mined for minerals used in health supplements and fertilisers and has also been mined for use in water filters to remove impurities such as chlorine and formaldehyde.
This sterling silver ring displays detailed polyps that used to be part of an ancient fossil coral head. With gradated mineral colouring, it has medium contrast and is a great way to wear a piece of ancient geological history. Shaped into a circular cabochon and polished to show off polyp detail, this fossil ring measures approximately 23mm in diameter and has a straight band. An amazing gemstone ring which is even prettier than the photos!
