Chalcedony is a type of quartz but with a different crystalline structure, and the colour is the outcome of different metallic impurities present during crystallization. It is a translucent gemstone, giving it a lovely waxy appearance. Only the exceptional quality transparent pieces are faceted – the rest are cabbed or carved.
