Iron pyrite (known also as Fool’s Gold) is often found near gold and quartz reams and in coal mines. It looks similar to gold but is lighter in colour and more brittle. It is named from the Greek word for fire, because it can create sparks when struck against stone or metal. Pyrite forms in cubic crystals and was first discovered around 50 A.D.
Magnetite is known as lodestone or magnetic hematite and the name ‘magnetite’ originates from Magnesia in Greece, a historical iron production region. Magnetite is often found with a covering of hairy iron fragments on it due to its naturally magnetic properties – it is the most magnetic naturally occurring mineral on Earth (but please note, jewellery is only minorly magnetic due to the small amount of magnetite). It is mined in many places around the world.
Healer’s Gold and Apache Gold are other names used for this unusual combination of pyrite in magnetite. The colours are pale golden pyrite combined with a brown/black iron oxide.
