Iron pyrite (known also as Fool’s Gold) is often found near gold and quartz reams and in coal mines. It looks similar to gold but is lighter in colour and more brittle. It is named from the Greek word for fire, because it can create sparks when struck against stone or metal. Pyrite forms in cubic crystals and was first discovered around 50 A.D.
Basalt is a dark coloured volcanic stoneware rock with a fine grain. It is formed by the rapid cooling of basaltic lava from earth fire and is composed of olivine, pyroxene, magnesium and iron. Basalt can be found in a variety of shades from grey to brown to black. Nearly 90% of all volcanic rock on the earth is basalt (fast cooled magma). The name is derived from a misspelling of Latin, with ‘basanites’ meaning ‘hard stone’.
