Pyrite was treasured in ancient civilizations and the name comes from the Greek word ‘pyr’ or ‘pyros’, meaning ‘fire’. In Germany it is known as ‘Cat’s Gold’. It has a bright metallic luster and creates sparks when struck by iron. An iron sulfide mineral, pyrite can often be found near actual gold, hence its nickname of ‘Fool’s Gold’ given to it by prospectors of the gold rush days. Iron pyrite was prized by the native American tribes who polished it into mirrors for gazing and divination and throughout history the gemstone was used for ornamentation and was carved into shoe buckles, rings, snuff boxes etc. It was particularly popular during the Victorian Age in England for jewellery.
This pyrite pendant is set in 925 sterling silver and it displays a stunning pyrite flower formations in agate. When held up in the sun, the pyrite details shine and stand out! The pendant measures approximately 37mm (1.5”) from the top of the bail to the base and is 17mm across at the widest point.
