Dendritic agate is sometimes called ‘picture stone’ or ‘painted stone’. It can be opaque to translucent and has brown or black branch markings in it (known as ‘dendrites’ – these are made of iron and/or manganese). It is one of the rarer varieties of agate and the dendrites crystallise inside the agate, forming the organic plant shapes. Dendritic opal is another name given to the same stone and is the translucent, crystalline part of the gemstone, with high contrast inclusions. In the middle ages, both noblemen and witches adored this stone!
Merlinite is a name given to a combination of dendritic agate or dendritic opal with highly contrasted dendrites (plant markings). It is usually found in black and white colours, or can be a deep grey or bluish-black colour. Merlinite is well known for its snowy scenes.
